My issue is that it only exists to do what 300 did, yet it does all of it so much worse. Hell, if enough people rip an idea off over a long enough period of time, in movies, we call that a genre. I can handle Immortals doing what 300 does. And Immortals doesn't give me the vibe that anyone did). But someone involved somewhere has to want more from their movie than that.

(Don't get me wrong, I know that the real motivation behind both these, and of any other studio film, is money.

The 300 movie exists to be an adaptation of the 300 comic book, the Immortals movie exists because the 300 movie made money. I'm actually quite fond of historically-set mythology films, but I don't believe the problem with Immortals isn't the setting or the genre, it's the motivation behind its being made the way it was. Rating: R (Strong Bloody Violence|A Scene of Sexuality)Įveryone talks about how Immortals is a 300 ripoff, and don't get me wrong, it absolutely is, but I haven't yet seen anyone talk about how it's also a bit of a God of War ripoff. A stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) heeds the words of the sibylline oracle (Freida Pinto), who convinces him that he is the key to stopping the bloodthirsty king. Hyperion's goal is to find the long-lost Bow of Epirus with this invincible weapon, he can cast the gods out of Mount Olympus and become master of the world. Reminded me of Lynch's Dune (which I actually really like but am not surprised most didn't).Īpparently the director is known for stylish visuals in his movies which makes sense, but this honestly made popcorn fluff like Gods of Egypt and the Clash of the Titans remake look way better than they were, as they were at least coherent (visible!) movies that entertained.Power-hungry King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his ruthless army march across Greece, leaving burned-out villages and the corpses of the innocent in their wake. Knowing nothing about it, it just screamed "very expensive flop, and not a surprising one" to me. Acting was poor from some usually good actors, too. I am fine with movies that go for style over substance (300, Annihilation, etc.) but this was just an unpleasant experience trying to figure out what was happening (continuity was terrible, too), what was being said, and what the narrative was trying to say. Not mumbling? Wear a mask to muffle your lines more! Just saw it and felt it was a great looking movie that was a total mess, but the worst offences was how dark it was and how mumbled the dialog was. Maybe I missed it, but how did the bow get to be encased in rock outside his mother's tomb?.I like how they suggested that the Minotaur and maze from Greek mythology were really just distorted retellings of what really happened, based on the fact that guy had a bull-shaped helmet and the mausoleum was sort of a maze. They sure used a lot of rebar in ancient Greece - the Titans had it in their mouths, and I noticed some elsewhere as well.I like that Poseidon's idea of helping was to send a tidal wave, lol.IMO many of the scenes would've been much better had they taken place in daylight vs dusk or night. And finally, the movie was sooo dark, which is particularly challenging when many characters are wearing very similar costumes, making it very hard to tell who is who. And as much as I like Stephen Dorff, I don't think he was right for that role. On the negative side, the dialog was sorta weak in a lot of places. And Mickey Rourke did a good job as well. The scene transition where the soldier's head turns into a boat with oars was slick. The choreography, camera work, and effects in the fight scenes were amazing. On the positive side, I agree with most that it was very visually well done. Finally go around to watching this last night.
